NaCreSoMo? NaCreSoMo! Or “National Create Something Month”. Join me in the month of March in making things and being creative.
And what is NaCreSoMo, you ask? (I’m so glad you did.) It all goes way back to…2013…when a woman named Lily found herself frustrated with her own lack of creativity. Once upon a time, she made new things every day, but lately she had been “too busy” with other things, and other such excuses not to make and share her Creations. And thus she declared the third month of the year to be National Create Something Month, or “NaCreSoMo” for short.
(You may have heard of “NaNoWriMo”. Think of this as an off-season, low-key version of that.)
The rules are simple:
- You can join anytime.
- You can post on any sort of creative project, creative process, or actual work in progress. i.e. you can post about work, not just the pieces themselves.
- You give one comment back per day (on someone else’s post).
- You make at least one post per day (you can back post).
The point of this effort is both to create more than you would otherwise (deadlines are magic) and to post more of it publicly than you would otherwise. This will be my fourth year participating, and each year I’ve added some goals of my own; this year that additional goal is an animation project that for me is quite ambitious. (I’ll talk about that during the month.)
But I’m not going to hold myself too strictly to this; an important thing I’ve learned from past years is “if you push too hard, it’s a lot less fun”. So don’t worry about Rule 4.
To organize this community, there’s an official group on Facebook where you can add your name and site and see the list of everyone participating, managed by me and our founder Lily. If you’re the sort who avoids Facebook, send me a link to your blog/site/whatever, or comment below, and I’ll share it with the group. (I’ll send you the list of participants privately.)
I’ve actually got something going on during the first week of March, so I may not start posting until a few days in. Anything I do will be on this site under the tag “NaCreSoMo 2016”, and I’ll also be cross-posting to Facebook as usual.
Give it a try. Join us!
