"Mado Kara Mieru" (Chiptune WIP)

Today for NaCreSoMo I took a hint from last year’s chiptune and made an arrangement of a tiny bit of Christopher Tin’s “Mado Kara Mieru”.

I haven’t done much chiptune lately, though there are a few halfhearted GarageBand files lying around on my hard drive. There’s a step between simply transcribing the notes that are there and doing something in the new medium that’s been eluding me. (This is true for a cappella arrangement as well, and I assume any kind of cross-instrument / cross-genre music arrangement—the success is when it stands on its own in the new medium.)

The last major chiptune piece I did was (surprise) Umineko’s title theme:

The most interesting thing about this one is that in order to make it “fit the new medium” I invented an entirely new melodic line, which you can hear at 0:13 and 0:54. The original doesn’t have anything there because it has drums and lyrics, but neither of those are going to come across in the chiptune format. And it came out sounding completely natural.

“Mado Kara Mieru” is from the song cycle “Calling All Dawns”, which is possibly my favorite modern original orchestral album. I’d love to see a live performance someday, although it’s probably a few years too late.

Part of NaCreSoMo 2017.
