There’s a lot going on in the world, and only so much time in a week to do everything we want or need to do. But it’s important to keep a work/life balance and to have a creative outlet, and for that there’s
Bad Rep Theatre NaCreSoMo.
And what is NaCreSoMo, you ask? (I’m so glad you did.) It all goes way back to…2013…when a woman named Lily found herself frustrated with her own lack of creativity. Once upon a time, she made new things every day, but lately she had been “too busy” with other things, and other such excuses not to make and share her Creations. And thus she declared the third month of the year to be National Create Something Month, or “NaCreSoMo” for short.
(You may have heard of “NaNoWriMo”. Think of this as an off-season, low-key version of that.)
The rules are simple:
- You can join anytime.
- You can post on any sort of creative project, creative process, or actual work in progress. i.e. you can post about work, not just the pieces themselves.
- You give one comment back per day (on someone else’s post).
- You make at least one post per day (you can back post).
The point of this effort is both to create more than you would otherwise (deadlines are magic) and to post more of it publicly than you would otherwise. The counter to this is that if you push too hard, it’s a lot less fun. So don’t worry too much about Rule 4.
To organize this community, there’s an official group on Facebook where you can add your name and site and see the list of everyone participating, managed by me, our founder Lily, and another participant all the way back to the first year, Josephine. If you’re the sort who avoids Facebook, send me a link to your blog/site/whatever, or comment below, and I’ll share it with the group. (I’ll send you the list of participants privately, for those who are posting what they make off of Facebook.)
I think I’ve actually been doing pretty well on creative works over the past year, so I’ll be taking this NaCreSoMo pretty low-key. I’m still working on editing Morning Glory, the story I wrote for NaNoWriMo 2016, and I’ve also got a programming project and a little music project that I could work on too. (Hint hint.) Anything I do will be on this site under the tag “NaCreSoMo 2018”, and I’ll also be cross-posting to Facebook as usual.
P.S. Mentioning my theater group was a joke, but there probably will be auditions in March for a show in late June, so…!
