Dotting the Eyes

Stumbling wanderers
Barely set out upon their journey
Looking for a conjurer
To illuminate the way.

Searching for guidance
In a world far older than man.
Yet forgetting kindness
As they hunt about, unseen.

Cities grow, mountains die,
The moon, it glows with the swell of the tide
Are you happy? Well, I—
I really don’t know.

A spark, a glimpse
And suddenly the landscape is changed.
Yet still just kids
Playing grown-up with the world.

With our banners unfurled
There’s still something missing
In this old, old, world
Do we notice that we’re blind…

Cities grow, mountains die,
The moon, it glows with the swell of the tide
Are you happy? Well, I—
I really don’t know.

Not the filmy gaze
of old, infirm, and weak.
The iris wide but nothing to be seen.

The face is but a mask
that we’re all used to wearing
It’s the dots in the eyes that tell us what we mean.

Cities grow, mountains die,
The moon, it glows with the swell of the tide
Are you happy? Well, I—
I really don’t know.

And he finally found it,
His past, his life, his self.
Eyes that finally fit
In a human face…¦

Inspired by the music video for Vienna Teng’s “Gravity”, though her song “Decade and One” kept running through my head as I wrote it. Also somewhat inspired by Lily’s music.
