Fifty seven

Seconds

Just enough time to brush my teeth
And still reach work on time
As I peer out the window to the street beneath
I see the bus go by.
Oops.

Minutes

Just under an hour till she’s here
Is everything perfect this time?
I gotta keep up my casual veneer
In case it’s in my eyes—
Hello!

Hours

Today, again, confined to bed
I pushed myself too hard
Can’t read or work with aching head
And immune system en guarde
Ugh.

Days

I guess it’s now official, then
It’s time to change my password
I never thought I’d return again
But fate will have the last word
“Log In”.

Weeks

It’s been a year; I still remember
Why can’t I let it go?
Not for the romance in December
But that I just don’t know
Welp.

Months

More years out than years at school
I guess it’s real life
And now I play the lucky fool
Is that a cause to gripe?
Maybe?

Years

Is that really how long it’s been?
Oh yes, I have regrets
Though you can’t see them on my skin
Was it really for the best?
For what it’s worth
I’m sorry.

Eleven times ten
Plus the square root of sixteen
Divided by two
