Lucky Penny

I found a lucky penny
And I put it in my pocket
Then I wondered ʼbout my front door
Not sure if I had locked it

And lost in thought I stumbled
On the pavement, on a crack
And found myself a-sprawled below
With aching in my back

Slowly I climbed to my feet
Then nimbly dodged aside
As a bike came pelting down the ʼwalk
I swear I could have died

And died again, for suddenly
A crack did I then hear
Down fell a branch right next to me
A weighty verdant spear

I rose to kneel, then over keeled
And clasped my sweaty hands
When I realized I had no pockets
Because I had no pants

Though not too strange a sidewalk sight
I’ll forego coinage hence
I lost my lucky penny
Guess I have no common cents

This was supposed to be a joking kids’ poem…what happened? I blame you, Mark.
