Sua sdei jo chhnam chin, 新年快乐, and happy lunar new year!
In Cambodia, the big new year’s celebration is not on January 1st (“international new year” in Khmer), nor is it the same as the Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese lunar calendar (“Chinese new year”). Rather, it’s in April…which means I’m going to miss it! And it’s also a lunar calendar (shared with Thailand and I think Laos as well), so saying “lunar new year” is no longer specific enough.

Each year I send a nengajō to my high school Japanese teacher (originally it was an assignment, now it’s just for fun). This year I branched out and made copies for a few Japanese-speaking friends as well…including one who actually lives in Japan! (It got there late, but it still got there!) Happy Year of the Tiger!
I don’t know if I explained this before, but every (solar) new year I send nengajō (new years’ cards) to my past Japanese teachers. It’s fun! Anyway, here’s mine from this year. It has a tiger and says “kinga shinnen”, which is a more formal “Happy New Year”.
Tomorrow I will ask my Vietnamese-speaking friends how to pronounce chúc mừng năm mới, since I can already do 新年快乐.
