"Dungeon" (WIP)

Today’s post for NaCreSoMo is me messing around with GarageBand trying to make the “Hyrule Castle” theme from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

GarageBand has a few very nice software instruments along with many many not-so-nice ones. It also has a fair number of holes in its repertoire (I wanted the very low clarinet at the end to be a bassoon). What I’m noticing now, though, is that the current version of GarageBand is, for some reason, incredibly laggy. Manipulating notes in the MIDI-ish timeline causes a spinning beach ball of death almost every time. Selections don’t work reliably. Undo takes a long time and then doesn’t even always undo properly.

…and now I just reopened the project, and everything seems to be working better. So maybe it’s just the background activity I had going that was causing problems. Hmph.

On top of all that, I didn’t do a great job on the track itself, despite spending a good hour and a half at least. I didn’t get around to filling in any of the background parts, and again the software instruments are less than ideal. But hey, perhaps I’ll finish this some day. Meanwhile, you can check out a much more impressive version from the folks at Zelda Reorchestrated: “Hyrule Castle Overthrown”.
