A Suitable Excuse for a Polka Dot

A crisply-tied Windsor, one that’s otherwise bland.
A brightly-colored beach towel for you to lay out on the sand.
Maybe on your boxers—no one sees them anyway.
Even a shirt will do if you’re trying to brighten up your day.

Wrapping paper round a present for your seven-year old niece.
A “Happy Winter Holidays” card for the man who signed your lease.
A bright and cheerful banner, announcing “Everything Must Go!”.
A pocket book of sheet music written for the piccolo.

At any office party (where the dress code’s not too strict).
On a date at the restaurant where the two of you first clicked.
At formal celebrations with not enough festivities.
And maybe it’s just one of your natural proclivities.

Running for public office, interviewing for a job.
Buying a coffee from Starbucks, joining in a mob.
Doing all the dishes, surviving an earthquake.
Procrastinating, pontificating, and making a birthday cake.

With all these reasons listed to make it what you choose
Why need to feel excused?
