Chicks and Chickpeas

Everybody knows about the birds and the bees.
But I bet you don’t know about the chicks and the ’peas!
For the process doesn’t end when the coupling is done
Once the egg has been pollinated the journey’s just begun.

Now the chickpeas start dividing once the egg has been laid
(At this point the decision on sex has been made)
But the beans fly the coop as the the baby bird grows
And soon the worm buries itself away from the crows.

Let a month or two by, and the chick will have wings
Or at least have sprouted appendages and things
It begins to grow until it weighs like a boulder
And then finally it—well, maybe I’ll tell you when you’re older.
