NaCreSoMo 2015

It’s been a while since I’ve worked on something creative just because. Work’s been busy, and then there have been lots of fun activities on weekends. But it’s gotten to the point where I’m noticing that I haven’t written any fiction in a while, haven’t recorded any guitar covers in a while, haven’t…many things.

Fortunately, there’s an answer: NaCreSoMo!

And what is NaCreSoMo, you ask? (I’m so glad you did.) It all goes way back to…2013…when a woman named Lily found herself frustrated with her own lack of creativity. Once upon a time, she made new things every day, but lately she had been “too busy” with other things, and other such excuses not to make and share her Creations. And thus she declared the third month of the year to be National Create Something Month, or “NaCreSoMo” for short.

(You may have heard of “NaNoWriMo”. Think of this as an off-season, low-key version of that.)

The rules are simple:

  1. You can join anytime.
  2. You can post on any sort of creative project, creative process, or actual work in progress. i.e. you can post about work, not just the pieces themselves.
  3. You give one comment back per day (on someone else’s post).
  4. You make at least one post per day (you can back post).

Lily’s traveling during March, so I’ll be the one managing the Facebook group that has the list of all participants. If you want to join us “officially” (and get comments from other participants), let one of us know and we’ll add you to the group!1

I’ve done this for two years now, and each year has come out very differently. The first time my personal goal was to try working with lots of different media, especially upon seeing what everyone else posted. Last year I tried to put together a mini-tutorial describing how a compiler works (along with plenty of more traditionally “creative” things), with less than full success. An important thing I learned here was “if you push too hard, it’s a lot less fun”…so don’t worry about Rule 4.

This year, I want to use NaCreSoMo as impetus to work on the music video that’s been “in progress” for…um, over a year now. Besides that, I’d like to put up a few more guitar covers and do some one-off fiction writing; we’ll see how things go. Once again, I’ll be posting my own work on this site under the tag “NaCreSoMo 2015”. I’ll also be cross-posting to Facebook to garner interest and views.

Join us!

…what? That flyer from year 1? Okay, fine.

  1. If you’re the sort who avoids Facebook, you can still send me a link to your blog/site/whatever and I’ll share it with the group, so you can still get comments. ↩︎
