Snapshots from Editing

Today for NaCreSoMo I worked on that music video I’ve been on-and-off making for…maybe a year and a half, now. There have been some line-up changes since last time I posted about it on this blog; fellow NaCreSoMo participant Jeffrey ended up dropping out of the cast with too many other responsibilities, and another friend, James, has taken his place with aplomb. Here’s a still I posted to Facebook after the most recent shoot a few months ago:

And here’s the Final Cut Pro timeline for the project!

I’m not sure what I can say about video editing. It’s at once a precision thing, trying to decide down to the frame when to cut from one scene to another, and an exercise in experimentation and compromise, figuring out how to best use the imperfect shots we have. (The latter is important because the park where we filmed some of the scenes is closed and the lead actor, Mark, no longer has the same color hair.)

Anyway, I came back to the project today for the first time in months and discovered that Past Me had edited more than I thought he had. Thanks, Past Me! By the end of the day, the video was in very good shape, with only a few concrete tasks left.

Oh, and a gaping hole during the bridge of the song, which I’m still not quite sure what to do about. Hopefully Mark and I will be able to film something to go there.

This video’s been a long time in production, but meanwhile you can check out my previous music video project from 2012: OneRepublic’s “All Fall Down”. This was part of a show called Summer of Rice, an informal spin-off of the UC Berkeley student performance group Theatre Rice.

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area and you want to be in a music video, or even just want to help out, let me know! This latest project is evidence that I don’t necessarily stay very on top of them, but I do put a lot of care and effort into my work…and I already have concrete ideas for at least three other songs beyond this one.
