Sleep Now

Sleep now
And forget the dreams that linger in your past
Sleep now
Just surrender to the darkness deep and vast
For what’s done is gone behind you
And you know will never find you
You don’t need it to remind you of what’s passed.

Sleep now
Put these thoughts now whirling through your head to rest
Sleep now
For the cure of quiet slumber would be best
But you feel your breath still quaking
Is it mind or heart that’s breaking
Or perhaps someone is making a cosmic jest.

Sleep now
Let troubled mind be heal’d in Lethe’s lake
Sleep now
Perhaps this life is just one more to fake
For “now” goes on but never “then”
These ghosts will disappear again
And perhaps things will be better when you—

I was stuck on this one until I heard it in the rhythm of “Into the West” (Annie Lennox, for LOTR) and “Soon Love Soon” (Vienna Teng, again). The final product’s not much like either of them, but it could still some day be a song. Perhaps.
