Visual Poems

A couple of medium-length poems that use some sort of visual effect.

A Mathematical Limerick

\bigg\varepsilon\exists e \in \mathbb{R} \ \mathrm{s.t.} \int_0^d e^t dt = e^d + C \ \mathrm{(5W)}\qed

To be read:

There exists a real number e,
such that the integral from 0 to d
of e-t d-t
is e-d plus C
Which was what we wanted; QED.

a distant father
or
a tired old man
someone you support
not
someone you rely on
I could be
more than that
but
it’s too hard
I would never say
I’ll be there for you
and
I love you
because
I don’t care
there are some things I shouldn’t have done
looking back
wish I could reverse time
I didn’t
understand my life

Content inspired, at least in part, by Theatre Rice’s productions of “World Without Memory” (Stimulus Package, Spring 2009) and “Monster” (Space Bar, Spring 2010). I was in and helped write the latter.

Try to figure it out first, but the device was inspired by the piece “Lost Generation”, itself inspired by Lopez Murphy’s political ad.

Hypothesis:
that any string

of words

with sufficiently complex structure
(and supported by interlocution)
can become a poem
by adding

well-chosen and -placed

whitespace

Evidence:
(see above)
