Eighteen Wizards, Two Kobolds, And A Dragon

Long ago it was foretold
That dark times would engulf the land
Until a band of heroes bold
Would rescue them with daring hand
And righteous braggin’.

This group—a rather middling lot
Had no credentials, knights, or nobles
And yet (they s’posed) they’re all we’ve got
Eighteen wizards and two kobolds
And a dragon.

That “they”, of course, were prophets high
Advisors only to the queen
(Of course disaster’s always nigh
And higher than it’d ever been
Or so they’re naggin’.)

But true, those eighteen, all that’s left
Of high and mighty warlocks past
The’ntire org’nization hence
These eighteen wizards were the last
(That’s with the hag in.)

And kobolds too! T’was quite a shock
(A xenophobic populace)
This pair the citizens did mock
For large-set eyes and lack of grace
And trousers saggin’.

But’f this was what the legends told
(The people dubi’usly agreed)
Then though they didn’t match the mold
They have our trust to take the lead
(Our gusto flaggin’.)

At no point did they stop to think
Exactly what fate lay in store
For ’twas set down in ancient ink
Forget that none read runes no more
All zig- and zaggin’.

But what about the twenty-first?
At that the wizards stopped and blinked
The kobolds groaned; this news was worst
For’f course dragons are now extinct
And their quest was doomed to fail.

Perhaps, ultimately,
Their fault for laggin’.

Did you know “cobalt” is named for kobolds? I didn’t!
