45 Self-Adhesive Security Lined Envelopes

Forty-five self-adhesive security lined envelopes
Five years, two months, and twenty-seven days
Thirteen pens, and many sheets of paper
Communication stretched across eight pairs of states

Photographs pinned on plastic pages of the past
Notebook carries a trademark from nineteen-ninety-six
The last time I saw you was in elementary school
And leaving left a hole in my heart that has yet to be fixed

Moving’s such a busy chore for everyone involved
But our parents talked and worried about us two
It wasn’t the first, nor would it be the last
They came up with letters as the plan to do

I never much liked talking on the telephone
That still stayed true even while growing older
But letters, it was right to write to you
Even as I felt our friendship growing colder

Forty-five self-adhesive security lined envelopes
That was what my parents bought that day
And now the box of folded paper’s finally empty
I think that I’m content to leave it that way.

Goodbye, Chris. Take care of yourself, okay?
