"Morning Glory"

Almost two years ago, I wrote my first mystery novel for NaNoWriMo, Morning Glory. Since then, I’ve been posting every now and then about editing the story, bringing it to my awesome writing group for feedback, and what other forms it might take in the future. And meanwhile I’ve been revising it on nights and weekends…

It’s finally done.

"Morning Glory": Backstory Barriers

Staying out late yesterday and then losing an hour of sleep to Daylight Saving Time1 led to me not doing anything particularly postable today for NaCreSoMo, but I did put a little more work into Morning Glory and into “Okay, You Two”. So for today’s post I’ll talk a little about a specific problem I have with Morning Glory: backstories.

“Why am I here?”

The young man looked at his hands, then pressed them to his face. Then his stomach.

“That is for you to answer,” came the reply from the woman seated across from him.

The man looked around for the first time. The two of them were in a dark room, with a single light providing a circle of illumination on a white marble floor. There was only one chair, in which the unfamiliar woman all but lounged as she gazed at him with a superior smile. On the ground between them was something that looked like a…
