The Space in the In-Between

That hum before the screen turns on
The drop hangs in the air
And the pause before he answers
In that one split-second stare

You lose your unsure footing
Metaphorical or real
That moment as you’re falling
What is it you feel?

A wild spinning, blur, confused
What-ifs in hopes and worries while
Floating, floating, context-free
With nothing on the dial

And then the current jumps the gap
The hand has come to call
The moment always vanishing
If it happened then at all.
